When the weekend weather produced unseasonably warm temperatures I made plans to be outside all day, though I didn't anticipate precipitation! I was left with no choice but to make the best of the weather in the only way I know how: style.

Happy Sunday everyone! With Valentine's Day weekend not far off my boyfriend and I found ourselves looking to celebrate in a subtle way sooner than later to beat the crowds which seem to swarm every local restaurant, movie theater, and shopping complex each holiday. To do so we planned a day trip yesterday (2.10) to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; a botanical garden featuring unique floral and architectural structures. Admission is $30 per person, but since I had my college ID with me I received $17 off my ticket! Talk about a great student discount.

The grounds at Longwood entail a fountain complex, various walking paths, gardens, a conservatory, and much more! Since we visited during the off-season when there isn't any plant growth outside we spent the majority of our time observing the exhibits in the conservatory (pictured above & below), as the foul weather prevented us from exploring much of the property. We planned our trip not realizing how much time we would spend walking around outside, as neither of us had ever visited Longwood before, and were slightly deceived by the weekend forecast which suggested mild temperatures and evening rain showers. Despite the rain our visit was a very enjoyable experience! I can't wait to go back in the spring to see everything in bloom.

Since I checked the weather report early yesterday morning I knew the temperature outside wouldn't be as arctic as it had been over the past week. I took full advantage of the slight break in the weather and wore this Talbots sleeveless trench coat style dress (which is one of my most recent thrift finds- I paid $8 for it!). I find this piece to be more of a summer dress but since it is a new addition to my collection I was extremely eager to determine a way to incorporate it into my winter wardrobe. To accomplish this I wore a white long-sleeve American Apparel t-shirt under the dress, popped on my all time favorite combat boots from Zara, added a belt to the waist, and carried my black Nine West crossbody bag over my shoulder. Though the dress is a Talbots Petite size 2, I felt my waistline was lost among the straight silhouette so I added a belt around the middle to adjust the fit. On top of the look I wore a black trench coat from White House Black Market; initially I planned to wear a black leather jacket but the trench coat seemed to work better with the style of the dress.
